In a triumphant display of expertise and influence, Nigeria’s aviation sector has cemented its place on the global stage, with three members of the Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers’ Association (NATCA) elected to key standing committees of the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Associations (IFATCA).

The milestone was achieved at the federation’s 64th Annual Conference, held from April 28 to May 2, 2025, in the gleaming metropolis of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, where the world’s aviation elite gathered to shape the future of air traffic management.

The elected NATCA representatives will now serve on IFATCA’s Constitution and Administration Committee, Professional and Legal Committee, and Technical and Operations Committee—roles that grant Nigeria a powerful voice in crafting global aviation policies, refining legal frameworks, and advancing cutting-edge operational standards.

Beyond these prestigious appointments, NATCA members also clinched positions in specialized task forces tackling policy reform and aviation safety, a move that underscores Nigeria’s growing technical prowess and commitment to global best practices.

Ahmad Abba, IFATCA’s Executive Vice President for the Africa and Middle East (AFM) region and a towering figure in Nigeria’s aviation landscape as Director of Special Duties at the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), described the achievement as a watershed moment.

“This triple election is not just a win for Nigeria but a resounding vote of confidence in the skill, dedication, and professionalism of our air traffic controllers,” Abba told attendees in a speech that reverberated with pride.

He framed the success as a direct endorsement of Nigeria’s strategic push to become a dominant player in global aviation, aligning seamlessly with the ambitious five-point agenda of Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.

The Abu Dhabi conference was a crucible of progress for the AFM region, with Nigeria at the forefront. In a historic expansion, Chad and Congo Brazzaville were formally admitted as IFATCA members, bolstering the federation’s influence in Central Africa.

A landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also inked between IFATCA and the Fédération des Associations des Contrôleurs Aériens de l’ASECNA, a move that promises to deepen collaboration across the region, streamline training, and elevate safety standards. “This MoU is a game-changer,” Abba remarked, “laying the foundation for a unified African approach to air traffic management.”

A defining moment of the conference came with the unveiling of the IFATCA AFM Strategic Plan 2025–2027, a visionary blueprint spearheaded by Abba himself. The plan charts an bold course for the region, prioritizing rigorous professional development, robust institutional frameworks, and unwavering commitment to safety.

It also emphasizes regional synergy, aiming to harmonize AFM practices with global standards while addressing the unique challenges of African airspace. “This is our roadmap to transform aviation into a cornerstone of economic growth and connectivity,” Abba declared, his words met with nods of approval from delegates.

“Every step we take on the global stage brings us closer to making Nigeria the aviation gateway to Africa,” Abba said, echoing the minister of aviations call for competitiveness and innovation.

The next regional meeting is slated for November 2025 in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, where delegates will build on the momentum generated in Abu Dhabi.

In a coup for African aviation, Uganda was announced as the host of the 2027 IFATCA Annual Conference, marking the event’s return to the continent after nearly a decade. The decision sparked jubilation among African delegates, who see it as a chance to showcase the region’s potential to the world.

For Nigeria, the Abu Dhabi conference was more than a moment of triumph—it was a clarion call. With its air traffic controllers now at the heart of IFATCA’s decision-making, the country is poised to shape the global aviation agenda. As Abba put it, “This is Nigeria’s time to fly, and we’re just getting started.”

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The conference wasn’t just about looking forward—it was about building on Nigeria’s momentum. The NATCA representatives’ elections signal a broader trend: Nigeria’s aviation sector is no longer content to follow; it is ready to lead.

From modernizing infrastructure to training world-class professionals, the country is executing Keyamo’s vision with precision, positioning itself as a hub that can rival established giants
