Nigerian hip-hop artist Zlatan Ibile has candidly discussed the profound effect fatherhood had on his life, describing how becoming a father at 25 constrained his lifestyle and forced him to mature rapidly.

In a revealing interview on the ‘Is This A Safe Space?’ podcast, the ‘Zanku’ hitmaker reflected on the life-changing moment five years ago when he welcomed his son, detailing how the experience triggered a complete re-evaluation of his priorities and spending habits.

“The birth of my son changed me. It made me realize that life was getting more serious,” Zlatan disclosed during the conversation. The rapper admitted he was unprepared for the responsibilities that came with parenthood, particularly the financial burden of raising a child in London, where he was renting accommodation at just 25 years old.

The artist, whose real name is Omoniyi Temidayo Raphael, revealed that the weight of financial responsibility was compounded by doubts about his long-term viability in Nigeria’s competitive music industry. “I was scared I might not be able to keep up with the bills because some people were saying I might not be relevant in the music industry for more than three years,” he confessed.

This uncertainty prompted a significant shift in how Zlatan approached his finances. The rapper described implementing strict fiscal discipline, cutting unnecessary expenses and prioritizing savings for essential items like diapers and other childcare necessities. “I became more serious with managing my finances. Limited spending and started saving for diapers,” he recalled.

Beyond the financial adjustments, Zlatan acknowledged that fatherhood also prompted personal reflection on his past behavior. He expressed regret over certain previous actions and emphasized that his son’s arrival catalyzed abandoning certain unspecified habits that were no longer compatible with his new role as a parent.

The interview offers a rare glimpse into the personal life of one of Nigeria’s most prominent contemporary artists, highlighting the often-overlooked challenges young entertainers face when balancing burgeoning careers with unexpected family responsibilities.

Zlatan Ibile rose to prominence in the Nigerian music scene with his distinctive Zanku sound and has remained a significant figure in Afrobeats, seemingly defying the three-year relevance prediction that once haunted him.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Zlatan Ibile’s experience underscores a crucial reality often overlooked in the glamorous world of entertainment: early fatherhood forced the rapper into immediate financial maturity at 25, compelling him to abandon reckless spending and adopt disciplined money management despite fears his music career might not last.

His story reveals that becoming a parent, particularly while navigating an uncertain industry, demands sacrifice and lifestyle changes that can ultimately shape an artist’s long-term success and character.
