In a significant milestone for Nigeria’s energy sector ambitions, President Bola Tinubu has commissioned a state-of-the-art liquefied petroleum gas vessel that represents the country’s growing commitment to clean energy distribution across Africa.

The newly commissioned vessel, christened “MT Iyaloja (Lagos)” in honor of the late Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji—President Tinubu’s mother—is a 40,000 cubic meter dual-fuel, fully refrigerated LPG carrier owned by WAGL Energy Limited, a joint venture between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and Sahara Group.

The commissioning ceremony, held at the Ulsan shipyard in South Korea, was attended by Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) Ekperikpe Ekpo, who represented the President. The ceremonial ribbon cutting was performed by Alhaja Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, the Iyaloja-General of Nigeria and granddaughter of the vessel’s namesake.

Strategic Expansion of Maritime Fleet

The addition of MT Iyaloja (Lagos) brings WAGL Energy Limited’s total LPG vessel capacity to 162,000 cubic meters, significantly expanding the company’s ability to transport clean cooking fuel across West Africa. The vessel joins an existing fleet that includes MT Africa Gas, MT Sahara Gas, MT BaruMK, and MT Sapet.

The fleet has delivered over 6 million metric tons of LPG across West Africa over the past five years, establishing WAGL as a major player in regional energy distribution. The company has ambitious expansion plans, with Managing Director Mohammed Sani Bello announcing intentions to add both a Small Gas Carrier and a Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) to the fleet within the next two years.

National Energy Transition Goals

The vessel commissioning aligns with Nigeria’s broader energy transition strategy. The government aims to switch over 60 million households to LPG by 2030, increasing average usage from 750,000 metric tons per annum to 2 million metric tons per annum. This ambitious target represents a critical component of Nigeria’s plans to leverage its substantial natural gas reserves for domestic and regional energy security.

Nigeria possesses approximately 209 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves, and the government has designated gas as the country’s transition fuel, positioning the nation as a potential energy hub for the continent.

Presidential Vision for Continental Leadership

Speaking through his representative, President Tinubu emphasized Nigeria’s potential to become a continental energy leader. “Nigeria is poised to deliver clean and sustainable energy solutions not just in-country but also across Africa and beyond,” the president stated, highlighting the strategic importance of LPG infrastructure in achieving energy security across the region.

NNPC Limited’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Bashir Ojulari, represented by Executive Vice President for Gas, Power & New Energy Olalekan Ogunleye, described the vessel as “a great addition to the gas development program in Nigeria” and emphasized the state oil company’s commitment to ensuring LPG affordability, availability, and nationwide access.

Industry Partnership and Investment Impact

The commissioning underscores the growing significance of public-private partnerships in Nigeria’s energy sector. Sahara Group Chairman and Executive Director Temitope Shonubi emphasized that the expansion demonstrates the company’s vision of “responsibly driving efforts aimed at bridging the continent’s critical energy infrastructure gap.”

According to Sahara Group spokesperson Bethel Obioma, the vessel commissioning reflects the company’s commitment to transforming Africa’s energy landscape through strategic investments in LPG storage and distribution infrastructure, directly addressing challenges of energy access, affordability, and security across the continent.

Symbolic Significance

The naming of the vessel carries deep personal and cultural significance. Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, after whom the vessel is named, was not only President Tinubu’s mother but also held the traditional title of Iyaloja of Lagos—a position of considerable influence representing market women and traders. The choice to honor her legacy through this maritime asset reflects the intersection of family heritage, cultural tradition, and national development aspirations.

This commissioning represents more than just the addition of maritime capacity; it signals Nigeria’s determination to position itself as a leader in Africa’s energy transition while honoring the legacy of those who paved the way for current progress.

As the continent grapples with energy access challenges, such strategic investments in clean fuel infrastructure could prove pivotal in shaping Africa’s energy future.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Nigeria has significantly expanded its clean energy infrastructure with the commissioning of the MT Iyaloja (Lagos), a 40,000 cubic meter LPG vessel that brings the country’s total LPG shipping capacity to 162,000 cubic meters.

This strategic investment by WAGL Energy Limited (an NNPC-Sahara Group joint venture) directly supports Nigeria’s ambitious goal to transition 60 million households to clean cooking gas by 2030, positioning the nation as a continental energy leader while leveraging its massive 209 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves to address Africa’s energy access challenges.
