The National Economic Council (NEC) has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s proposal to completely renovate, remodel, and re-equip all training institutions belonging to Nigeria’s security agencies.

This major decision follows concerns raised by the president over the deteriorating condition of training facilities for the Nigeria Police Force and other security institutions across the country. Tinubu emphasized the urgent need to modernize these institutions to enhance professionalism, discipline, and operational efficiency within the nation’s security architecture.

Speaking to State House correspondents shortly after the 153rd NEC meeting held at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani revealed that the council also agreed that state governments will collaborate with the Federal Government to ensure the successful implementation of the overhaul.

Governor Sani explained that NEC established a committee to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the affected training centres nationwide. The committee is chaired by Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, who recently defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Other members include Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, and Governor Sule Abdullahi of Nasarawa State.

The former Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, will serve as the committee’s secretary, bringing his experience and expertise in law enforcement to the project.

Governor Sani further disclosed that the initiative will not be limited to the Nigeria Police Force but will also extend to the training institutions of other security agencies, including the armed forces and paramilitary organizations.

The meeting, which was presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima, also had President Tinubu joining later after swearing in the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, at the same venue.

According to insiders, the president’s decision signals his administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security system by improving the quality of training received by personnel across all security formations.

What you should know

President Bola Tinubu’s plan to overhaul Nigeria’s security training institutions aims to address long-standing issues of inadequate infrastructure and outdated equipment that have hindered effective policing and security operations.

The initiative will cover facilities used by the police, armed forces, and other security agencies, ensuring a unified approach to capacity building.

With governors actively involved and a high-profile committee already in place, the project marks a major step toward improving Nigeria’s overall security framework and professional standards within the sector.
