Super Eagles skipper Wilfred Ndidi has expressed strong belief and renewed confidence as he takes on a leadership role ahead of Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign, stressing that the squad is focused, united and eager to bounce back from recent setbacks.

Ndidi, who was officially handed the captain’s armband earlier this week, said the Super Eagles are approaching the AFCON with a positive mindset and a clear sense of purpose.

“The expectation is really high. Everyone is talking about it, the mood in camp is very positive, and the boys are really excited,” the 28-year-old said in an interview with POOJA on Tuesday. “We are ready for the challenge.”

The former Leicester City midfielder, one of the most seasoned players in the squad, described leading the national team as both an honour and a responsibility, noting that it demands maturity and commitment beyond personal performance.

Now plying his trade with Beşiktaş, Ndidi explained that although his role has expanded, his dedication to the team remains the same.

“It’s really exciting,” he said. “It’s the same player, just with much improvement and more responsibility. Being captain of the Super Eagles is a privilege and an honour.”

”I’m ready to lead the team and give everything, with the help of the senior players, the coaching staff, and the managers.”

Nigeria head into the continental tournament determined to restore pride after missing out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a failure that weighed heavily on the squad and supporters alike.

Ndidi acknowledged that the disappointment is still felt within the team but believes the AFCON offers an opportunity to turn the page and deliver something meaningful.

“Not qualifying for the World Cup was really sad for us as players and for Nigerians,” the midfielder said. “But this tournament is a big step for us to get something positive again.”

Three-time African champions, Nigeria are looking to re-establish themselves among the continent’s elite, beginning their Group C campaign against Tanzania on Tuesday.

What you should know

Wilfred Ndidi’s appointment as Super Eagles captain comes at a critical time for Nigerian football, following the team’s failure to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

As one of the most experienced players in the squad, Ndidi is expected to provide leadership on and off the pitch while helping guide a motivated group through the AFCON.

Nigeria, a traditional powerhouse in African football, see the tournament as an opportunity to rebuild confidence, reconnect with fans and reaffirm their status on the continent after a difficult period.
