The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is set to hold a State of the Nation Discourse focusing on local government financial autonomy, emphasizing compliance with the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in *Attorney General of the Federation v. Attorney General of Abia State & 35 Others.*
In a statement signed by NBA General Secretary Mobolaji Ojibara, the association highlighted the importance of addressing obstacles to implementing the July 11, 2024, judgment, which granted full financial autonomy to Nigeria’s 774 local governments. The ruling declared it unconstitutional for state governors to control funds allocated to local governments.
The discourse, originally scheduled for February 10, 2025, has been moved to February 19, 2025, at the NBA House in Abuja. The event will convene key stakeholders, including state governors, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, and civil society organizations.
The NBA reaffirmed its commitment to fostering dialogue that strengthens local government accountability and efficiency, emphasizing that the event will provide a platform to address challenges hindering compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling and promote good governance in Nigeria.
