NBA Condemns Assault on NYSC Corps Member, Demands Prosecution of Security Operatives

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly criticized the brutal assault on Jennifer Elobor, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), by security operatives in Anambra State, describing the act as “inhumane” and an outright violation of her rights.

In a joint statement issued by its President, Afam Osigwe, and National Secretary, Mobolaji Ojibara, the NBA described the incident as a “direct violation of her dignity and fundamental human rights” and condemned it as “barbaric treatment” that must not go unpunished.

“The NBA commends the Anambra State Government for its swift action in identifying and arresting the operatives responsible. This decisive move reflects commendable responsiveness to public outrage,” the statement read.

The body of lawyers, however, maintained that accountability must go beyond arrests. According to the NBA, those involved should face prompt and diligent prosecution, not only as justice for Elobor but also as a deterrent against future misconduct.

A disturbing video that went viral on Monday showed operatives of the Operation Udo Ga-Achi, also known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, assaulting Elobor in Oba, Anambra State. The operatives accused her and other corps members of fraud, despite her pleas and presentation of her NYSC identification card. The footage captured them beating and later stripping her, sparking widespread outrage across the country.

The incident drew condemnation from Nigerians, the NYSC, civil society groups, and political leaders. On Tuesday, the Anambra State Government confirmed the arrest of the perpetrators, saying investigations were ongoing.

Still, the NBA stressed that beyond punitive measures, the case demonstrates the urgent need for continuous training and reorientation of security operatives. “Respect for human rights, professionalism, and restraint must be embedded in their conduct at all times,” the association noted.

The lawyers further urged the Anambra State Government to establish effective mechanisms that would prevent similar incidents and restore public confidence in the security structures meant to protect citizens. The NBA vowed to monitor the case and ensure justice for Elobor.
