Legislative proceedings in the Senate and the House of Representatives have been suspended until Tuesday, July 22, 2025, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The announcement was made on Monday by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, who said the decision was directed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

According to the statement, the suspension of plenary sessions is part of a national tribute to the former leader, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London.

“In honour of his legacy and service to the nation, I am directed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to inform all members of the National Assembly and the general public…” Ogunlana noted.

Lawmakers have been advised to reschedule their activities in order to participate fully in the burial arrangements for the late President.

The leadership of both legislative chambers extended their condolences to the government and people of Nigeria, Katsina State, as well as Buhari’s widow, Aisha, and the entire Buhari family.

“President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered for his commitment to Nigeria’s unity and his integrity,” the statement added.

Buhari, a native of Daura in Katsina State, served as Nigeria’s military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985 and later as a two-term democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.

What you should know

The National Assembly’s decision to suspend plenary is a symbolic gesture to honour the legacy of late President Muhammadu Buhari, a figure remembered for his stern leadership style, emphasis on anti-corruption, and unrelenting stance on national unity. Lawmakers will reconvene after the mourning period concludes.
