The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has announced plans to investigate credible reports arising from recent public concerns over alleged incidents of child sexual abuse and misconduct in daycare centres across Nigeria.

The development follows renewed backlash against singer Simi after an old tweet about children at her mother’s daycare resurfaced on social media, with some users alleging it suggested inappropriate intent.

In a public notice shared on its official X page, NAPTIP stated that it takes all reports of child sexual abuse and misconduct seriously and is committed to investigating every credible claim.

“Public Notice: We take all reports of child sexual abuse/misconduct seriously and are committed to investigating every credible claim,” the agency said.

It added that following recent public discussions and concerns raised regarding alleged incidents in daycare settings, it is prepared to launch a full investigation once credible reports are received.

The agency called on individuals with factual information, evidence, direct knowledge, or who were personally affected by the matters referenced in the viral posts or related experiences to reach out confidentially via direct message or email.

Meanwhile, Simi has dismissed the allegations, stating that the resurfaced tweets were playful remarks made years ago and were never intended to suggest anything inappropriate. She maintained that the posts carried no malicious or improper intent.

What You Should Know

NAPTIP’s statement does not confirm that any specific incident has been established but makes clear that the agency is prepared to act if credible information is provided.

The call for submissions signals that authorities are treating the matter as a serious child protection concern rather than a purely social media controversy. By inviting confidential reports from individuals with direct knowledge or evidence, the agency is positioning itself to determine whether formal investigations, interviews, or other legal steps are necessary.

The renewed attention stems from viral online discussions, but investigations by law enforcement agencies are typically evidence-driven. This means that social media allegations alone may not automatically trigger enforcement actions unless supported by verifiable facts.

NAPTIP’s intervention also underscores the broader issue of safeguarding children in daycare environments, which requires regulatory oversight, parental vigilance, and institutional accountability.

At the same time, the agency’s approach reflects the principle that allegations must be carefully examined to protect both potential victims and those accused, ensuring that due process and child welfare remain central to any next steps.
