The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has issued a public warning following the recall of Indomie Vegetable Flavour noodles due to the discovery of undeclared allergens that could present serious health dangers to consumers.

In a statement released on Sunday, the agency’s Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, explained that the affected noodle product is not currently being sold within Nigeria. Nevertheless, she said NAFDAC has stepped up monitoring activities across the country to ensure the recalled product does not find its way into Nigerian markets.

NAFDAC Raids

“In light of this development, NAFDAC has undertaken some proactive measures as a responsive regulator by ensuring increased vigilance actions to guard against the possible entry of the recalled product into Nigeria,” the statement read.

“Surveillance has been directed across all zones and states, and zonal directors and state coordinators have been mandated to mop up the product if found within their jurisdictions.”

Adeyeye disclosed that the agency’s Ports Inspection Directorate has also been placed on high alert to block the importation of any affected or unauthorised noodle products. She emphasised that noodles remain on the Federal Government’s Import Prohibition List, which makes their importation into Nigeria unlawful.

“It is important to note that noodles are listed on the Import Prohibition List of the Federal Government of Nigeria, meaning their importation into the country is not allowed. This significantly reduces the likelihood of the affected product entering the Nigerian market,” the statement read.

Despite this restriction, the NAFDAC boss noted that the agency has sustained heightened nationwide surveillance as a precautionary measure. She advised members of the public to remain vigilant, promptly dispose of the recalled product if encountered, and report any suspected sale or distribution to the nearest NAFDAC office or through the agency’s toll-free number, 0800-162-3322.

Adeyeye further encouraged Nigerians to report any adverse reactions associated with the consumption of the product using NAFDAC’s official E-reporting platforms available on the agency’s website.

What you should know

NAFDAC has issued this alert to protect public health after Indomie Vegetable Flavour noodles were recalled over undeclared allergens.

Although the product is not officially sold in Nigeria and noodles are banned from importation, the agency is increasing surveillance nationwide to prevent illegal entry or circulation. Ports and border points are on alert, while state and zonal officials have been instructed to remove the product if found.

Consumers are urged to stay cautious, discard the product if encountered, and report any sightings or health reactions promptly.
