Mr P Says the 2021 P-Square Reunion Was “Fake”

The long-simmering rift between Nigeria’s most famous musical twins has boiled over again, this time with Peter Okoye, known to millions as Mr P, delivering what he called his unfiltered account of the fallout with his brother, Paul Okoye, better known as Rudeboy.

In a lengthy video posted to his Instagram page on Thursday, Peter said he was done watching speculation fill the gaps left by silence. “I’ve watched lies travel farther than the truth.

Today, I’m finally giving the truth a voice,” he wrote in his caption, before throwing down a challenge to anyone, including his own twin, to produce evidence that contradicts his version of events.

The centerpiece of Peter’s revelation was his description of the brothers’ 2021 reconciliation, one that captivated Nigerian pop culture at the time as, in his words, a “fake reunion.”

According to his account, the thaw began while he was still in Atlanta, when his caretaker relayed word that Paul had apologized and wanted to reconcile.

Unable to reach his brother by phone, Peter said he arrived home in Lagos to find Paul’s associates already waiting for him, and later learned from his wife that Paul had shown up at their residence around 4 a.m., visibly shaken and repeating that he was “tired.”

Told that Paul had made the first move, Peter said he made the second, walking over to embrace his brother. News of the détente reportedly spread through the family quickly after Jude Okoye’s wife phoned to tell her husband the twins had settled things.

But Peter insisted the peace was narrower than the public believed. He said that when Paul raised the idea of reviving P-Square as a group the very next day, he refused, telling his brother that while they were back as family, he had no interest in resurrecting the duo.

He said their manager and elder brother, Jude, later proposed filming a video announcement so fans could celebrate, which the pair did, though Peter maintains they stopped short of billing it as an official P-Square return.

Peter said his doubts deepened that same night at a party marking the reunion, when Paul allegedly told him, in blunt terms, that he wanted P-Square revived regardless of Peter’s feelings on the matter.

“He said that when I never wanted P-Square. I just wanted us to come back as family,” Peter said, casting the episode as proof that the brothers had been pursuing different goals from the very start of their reconciliation.

Thursday’s video did not emerge in a vacuum. It follows days of renewed public sparring triggered by an unrelated controversy: Peter’s remark “Who Naija language help?” made in response to a social media user questioning why his French-speaking children didn’t also speak Igbo.

The comment drew heavy backlash, prompting Peter to apologize and clarify he never meant to disparage Nigerian languages or culture.

In the same breath, however, he accused Rudeboy of exploiting the moment to damage his image, referencing an “open letter” he says he wrote two years earlier making similar accusations.

Rudeboy, for his part, responded obliquely rather than directly, posting a video of his Igbo-language track “Nkenji Keke” alongside a declaration of pride in his Nigerian and Igbo identity, a post many fans read as a pointed jab at his twin, even though he did not name Peter outright.

The Okoye twins’ public disputes stretch back years, encompassing disagreements over music, management, finances and creative control within P-Square, the duo that dominated Nigerian pop for over a decade before splitting in 2017.

Their elder brother, Jude, who managed the group, has repeatedly been named by both men as a factor in their disputes.

Since going solo, Paul has built a successful career as Rudeboy, while Peter has continued recording as Mr. P, but as this week’s exchanges show, the wounds from their shared history remain far from healed.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Peter Okoye’s video reveals that the 2021 P-Square reunion patched up the brothers, not the band, and that mismatch in expectations, rather than the recent language controversy, is the real fault line still driving their public feud today.

The latest spat is just the newest symptom of an old, unresolved disagreement over what “reconciliation” was ever supposed to mean.
