Morocco captured a record third African Nations Championship (CHAN) crown on Saturday after Oussama Lamlioui’s late goal sealed a thrilling 3-2 win against Madagascar in Nairobi.

The encounter started with high drama as Felicite Manohatsoa stunned the crowd with a spectacular long-range effort in the ninth minute, giving Madagascar, who were making their first-ever appearance in the final, an unexpected advantage.

The Atlas Lions, however, wasted little time in finding their rhythm. Youssef Mehri burst past the Malagasy defence in the 27th minute to slot home the equaliser, sending the predominantly Moroccan-supporting fans in the Kenyan capital into jubilation.

Just before halftime, Lamlioui, the Berkane forward, found the back of the net to hand Morocco the lead for the first time in the game. The goal seemed to place the defending champions in control heading into the break.

Yet, Madagascar were not done. Substitute Toky Rakotondraibe, who had been the hero in their semi-final against Sudan with an extra-time winner, once again came to his side’s rescue. His strike midway through the second half restored parity and reignited hope for the spirited Malagasy side.

But Morocco’s determination prevailed. With only 10 minutes left on the clock, Lamlioui struck again to complete his brace and secure victory. His performance not only delivered the title but also earned him the tournament’s top-scorer honour with six goals.

The triumph marks Morocco’s third CHAN success, adding to their previous wins in 2018 and 2020. Beyond the trophy, the victory underscores the North African nation’s impressive year in football, highlighted by their youth teams clinching the Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations and reaching the final of the Under-20 competition.

As the Atlas Lions celebrate their continental dominance, attention now shifts to the much-anticipated senior Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Morocco will host for the first time since 1988. The tournament is scheduled to kick off on December 21, promising another historic moment for Moroccan football.
