President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his warm congratulations to the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Reverend Matthew Hassan Kukah, as the renowned cleric marked his 73rd birthday.

The president’s message was conveyed in a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Tinubu described Bishop Kukah as a respected priest whose lifelong commitment to humanity, particularly the poor and marginalized, continues to shape people-oriented policies and inspire development initiatives across Nigeria and the African continent.

According to the president, the Sokoto bishop has consistently demonstrated selflessness, blending his spiritual and academic endeavors with practical insights on how democracy can truly serve as a tool for development and good governance on a global scale.

The statement further emphasized Bishop Kukah’s historic contributions to Nigeria’s democratic advancement and his tireless efforts toward peacebuilding and national harmony.

“Bishop Kukah’s role in the struggle for the return of democracy in Nigeria and his support for peace and harmony are remarkable,” the statement partly read.

The president also recalled Kukah’s notable service to the nation, highlighting his membership in several high-profile national committees. These include Nigeria’s Truth Commission, where he played a key role in reconciliation efforts; his position as Secretary of the Political Reform Conference; his active participation as a member of Nigeria’s Electoral Reform Committee; and his leadership as Chairman of Nigeria’s Inter-religious Dialogue, a platform that has helped foster peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims.

Through these efforts, Tinubu noted, Bishop Kukah has stood as both a moral voice and a practical guide, ensuring that democratic values are strengthened while unity among Nigeria’s diverse faith communities is preserved.
