The Nigerian music industry and the Igbo cultural community are in mourning following the death of veteran highlife maestro and folklore singer Gentleman Mike Ejeagha, who passed away at the age of 95.

The announcement was made by his eldest son, Emma Ejeagha, who confirmed that the music icon died on Friday at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu after a prolonged illness.

Mike Ejeagha, a towering figure in Nigerian highlife music, was celebrated for his unique ability to weave intricate Igbo folktales into timeless songs that resonated with audiences across generations and cultural boundaries.

His music, characterized by its storytelling prowess and melodic simplicity, made him a household name and a cultural ambassador for Enugu State and Nigeria at large. With a career spanning over six decades, Ejeagha’s contributions to the highlife genre and Igbo folklore have left a mark on the nation’s musical heritage.

Mike Ejeagha was one of the finest musicians of his generation, with an easygoing personality and a humility that belied his towering celebrity status, Mbah wrote. “His fan base transcended boundaries, and he was easily one of the most recognizable voices in music.”

Ejeagha’s discography includes iconic songs such as “Akuko N’Egwu” and “Omenani,” which blended traditional Igbo storytelling with highlife rhythms, earning him a devoted following. His music not only entertained but also preserved and promoted Igbo cultural values, making him a beloved figure among both young and old.

His performances were often marked by his engaging stage presence and a deep connection with his audience, who cherished his ability to bring folklore to life through song.

The governor further noted the profound impact of Ejeagha’s work, stating, “His immense talent and genius lay in how he took simple indigenous folktales and turned them into unforgettable songs that resonate across cultures.” Mbah also shared personal reflections, recalling the warmth and wisdom Ejeagha exuded during their interactions. “I will always cherish fond memories of the time spent in his company—the joy he found in the ordinary,” he added.

Ejeagha’s passing has been met with an outpouring of tributes from fans, fellow musicians, and cultural enthusiasts across Nigeria. Many have taken to social media to share memories of his music and its influence on their lives, with some describing him as a “national treasure” whose legacy will endure through his songs and the values they embody.
