Jules Kounde turned into Barcelona’s unlikely match-winner after scoring two headers that powered the Catalan side to a 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday in the Champions League, a result that strengthens their push for a top-eight league phase position.
Ansgar Knauff briefly stunned the hosts by opening the scoring, but Kounde’s quick-fire double at the start of the second half placed last season’s semi-finalists firmly in charge.

This match marked Barcelona’s long-awaited Champions League return to Camp Nou for the first time since 2022, and it offered a measure of payback against the Frankfurt team that had embarrassed them in the Europa League that same year. Frankfurt flooded the stadium with their supporters during that infamous visit and eliminated Barca during one of the club’s lowest periods under Xavi Hernandez.
With Hansi Flick now guiding the team following a domestic treble and a Champions League semi-final appearance, the atmosphere around the club has been transformed. Still, this campaign has brought uneven performances, and defeats to Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain left Barcelona under pressure. By defeating Frankfurt, they remain in contention to avoid the dreaded play-off stage.
Barcelona dictated much of the early action, hemming in their German opponents, who were bruised from a 6-0 Bundesliga thrashing by RB Leipzig just days earlier. Robert Lewandowski thought he had opened the scoring, only for the effort to be ruled out due to an earlier offside. Their bright opening was undone in the 21st minute when a swift Frankfurt counter-attack broke their shape.

Lamine Yamal lost possession, allowing Nathaniel Brown to surge from defence and send a ball behind Barcelona’s high line for Knauff to collect. Gerard Martin attempted to cut it out with an outstretched leg but missed, leaving Knauff to shrug off Alejandro Balde and finish cleanly.
Eintracht defenders reacted quickly to smother a strike from Fermin Lopez, as Barcelona struggled to carve out clear chances. Yamal, usually electric, found Brown difficult to bypass in one of his more inconsistent evenings. Ellyes Skhiri came close to doubling Frankfurt’s advantage with a shot that just cleared the bar, a miss that would later haunt them.
Barcelona emerged from the break with renewed urgency, strengthened by the introduction of on-loan Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford. The England attacker immediately made his presence felt, first setting up Raphinha—who fired over—before delivering a superb cross that Kounde headed in during the 50th minute.

The French defender, whose form this season has dropped below expectations, quickly became Barcelona’s key figure by striking again only three minutes later. Yamal sent in a looping cross that Kounde redirected across goal and into the far corner.
While unable to secure a third goal that might have eased their nerves, Barcelona held on through tense closing moments. Frankfurt failed to engineer any threatening chances, leaving the home side to celebrate a crucial win that restores momentum to their European campaign.
