The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi State has denounced a recent ruling by a Sharia court in Birnin Kebbi against its Publicity Secretary, Sani Dododo, describing it as a politically driven attempt to muzzle dissent and silence opposition voices.
During a press conference at the PDP State Secretariat in Birnin Kebbi, the party accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government of Governor Nasir Idris of manipulating the judiciary for political gain.
Kebbi State PDP Chairman, Usman Suru, said the judgment stemmed from remarks made by Dododo during a public radio programme, asserting that the comments represented the official stance of the party.
“Alhaji Sani Dododo, in his capacity as the official spokesperson of the PDP, spoke with the full authority and backing of our party. His remarks reflected the PDP’s collective position on what we consider reckless, extravagant, and rudderless governance under Governor Nasir Idris,” Suru stated.
Suru further alleged that state institutions, particularly the judiciary, have been compromised to advance partisan agendas, accusing the governor of weaponizing the courts to persecute opposition figures.
The PDP reaffirmed its support for Dododo and pledged to contest the ruling through legal avenues. It also reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights of citizens and holding the government accountable.
“This situation is not only unjust; it is undemocratic and outright dangerous,” Suru said, calling on civil society groups, human rights organizations, and the general public to stand against what he termed a creeping erosion of democratic values in Kebbi State.
