The Kano State Government has issued a strong warning to traders engaged in food adulteration, leading to a series of arrests at the Dawanau International Grains Market.

During a visit to the market, the Commissioner for Commerce, Investment, and Industry, Alhaji Shehu Wada Sagagi, condemned the practice, emphasizing its damaging impact on the market’s integrity and the state’s reputation in global trade.

A Task Force operating within the market recently seized 82 tonnes of allegedly adulterated sesame seeds, valued at approximately N180 million. Sagagi expressed concern over the growing issue, stressing the need to uphold food safety standards.

To address the situation, the state government plans to establish a Commodity Exchange Department at the market, aimed at enhancing regulatory oversight and preventing further incidents of food adulteration.

Supporting the crackdown, Dawanau Market Chairman, Alhaji Mukhtar Isa, pledged full cooperation in identifying and prosecuting offenders. He also highlighted efforts to improve the market’s infrastructure, such as the installation of solar-powered streetlights and boreholes, while acknowledging power shortages as an ongoing challenge.

Meanwhile, the Federal Produce Inspection Service reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing market regulations and vowed to take strict action against those found guilty of food adulteration.

The Kano State Government’s firm stance underscores its dedication to ensuring consumer safety, fair trade, and the credibility of one of Nigeria’s largest grain markets.
