Harry Kane found the net before lifting his first major trophy as Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Moenchengladbach 2-0, marking Thomas Mueller’s final home appearance after a storied 25-year career at the club.
Although Bayern had already secured the Bundesliga title on Sunday after Bayer Leverkusen drew 2-2 with Freiburg, the team was officially awarded the Bundesliga shield in front of home supporters at full-time.
Kane opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a header off a Michael Olise cross, bringing his league tally to 25 goals. Olise later added a second in the closing moments to seal the win.
Despite a flat performance from Bayern, Gladbach failed to convert several promising chances. Mueller, playing his 750th match in all competitions for the club, nearly scored in the second half but saw his shot saved. He left the pitch in the 83rd minute to applause and a guard of honour, having won 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies.
“I can’t really work it through in my mind at the moment,” Mueller told Sky Germany, reflecting on the tribute. He expressed gratitude for the “75,000 hearts” in the stands.
Eric Dier, Kane’s longtime teammate from England and Tottenham, also bid farewell ahead of his move to Monaco.
Meanwhile, RB Leipzig’s hopes for a Champions League spot were crushed after a 0-0 draw at Werder Bremen. Leipzig, who have only missed Champions League qualification once since 2017, struggled to break down the hosts. Xavi Simons came closest with a shot that hit the post and another saved shortly after.
“It’s extremely disappointing,” admitted Leipzig’s Christoph Baumgartner. “There’s no point sugarcoating it — we don’t deserve the Champions League.”
Jurgen Klopp, now overseeing Red Bull’s football operations, will face his first off-season without Champions League football. Leipzig must defeat Stuttgart to have any hope of reaching the Europa League, while Bremen’s continental ambitions are unlikely due to poor goal difference.
Heidenheim secured the relegation play-off spot with a 3-0 victory at Union Berlin, featuring a double from Adrian Beck and one from Jan Schoeppner.
Holstein Kiel, in their debut top-flight season, took the lead against Freiburg but lost 2-1. Lasse Rosenboom’s opener was answered by Johan Manzambi just before halftime, and Lucas Hoeler secured Freiburg’s win early in the second half. Freiburg now sit in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League.
Bochum’s time in the Bundesliga ended after a 4-1 defeat to Mainz, with goals from Nadiem Amiri, Jonathan Burkardt, Phillipp Mwene, and Paul Nebel. Despite a mid-season resurgence, Bochum managed only two points from their last eight matches.
Bayer Leverkusen are set to host Borussia Dortmund in coach Xabi Alonso’s final home game.
