The Israeli military announced on Wednesday that it killed two Hezbollah operatives in airstrikes conducted the previous day in southern Lebanon, marking another escalation in a region that has seen repeated Israeli attacks despite a ceasefire with the Iran-backed group.

According to an official statement, Israel’s military “struck and eliminated two Hezbollah terrorists in the areas of Bint Jbeil and Blida in southern Lebanon” on Tuesday. The statement noted that the individual killed in Bint Jbeil had been involved in rebuilding Hezbollah’s military capabilities, which were severely weakened following the recent conflict with Israel. The second operative, killed in Blida, was reportedly gathering intelligence on the Israeli military.

The announcement came a day after a separate Israeli strike targeted the Ain al-Hilweh camp for Palestinian refugees in southern Lebanon, killing at least 13 people, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. Israel stated that the strike hit a “training compound” belonging to the Palestinian group Hamas. Hamas, however, denied the claim, asserting that it has no military installations within Lebanon’s Palestinian camps and dismissed the Israeli account as “lies.”

The strikes follow Monday’s killing of another Hezbollah member in southern Lebanon. Israel accused him of coordinating with residents in the Mansouri area, which was also targeted during the military action.

The Lebanese government has condemned the Israeli strikes as violations of the ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States and France on November 27, 2024, accusing Israel of repeatedly breaching the accord and maintaining forces inside Lebanese territory. Israel, in turn, maintains that Hezbollah is actively working to rebuild its military strength, in contravention of the ceasefire terms.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently warned that Hezbollah is attempting to rearm and restore its capabilities, framing the ongoing military actions as preventive measures against further threats from the group.

What You Should Know

Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah remain high despite the ceasefire in place since November 2024.

Israel continues to target what it identifies as military assets of Hezbollah and Hamas in southern Lebanon, while Lebanon accuses Israel of repeatedly violating the agreement.

These developments underscore the fragile security situation in the region, with the potential for further escalations if either side perceives continued threats or provocations.
