The House of Representatives Committee on Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) has urged the federal government to sustain and improve the funding of tertiary institutions rather than scrapping TETFUND.

Speaking on Thursday at Ebonyi State University’s permanent site during the inauguration of three newly completed TETFUND projects, committee chairman Miriam Onuoha described the agency as the lifeline of tertiary education in Nigeria.

She emphasized that TETFUND has played a significant role in job creation, supporting over 41,600 lecturers in postgraduate studies over 13 years. She also expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu would reject calls to scrap the fund.

Onuoha acknowledged concerns over substandard projects and delays in accessing funds but assured stakeholders that these issues were being addressed through legislative oversight.

Representing the Executive Secretary of TETFUND, Babatunde Olajide disclosed that the three inaugurated projects, totaling N1.34 billion, were part of annual interventions from 2016-2022.

Governor Francis Nwifuru, represented by Deputy Governor Patricia Obila, commended TETFUND for its contribution to infrastructure development in Nigerian higher institutions.
