Harry Styles, the former One Direction frontman turned global pop phenomenon, will take the reins of one of Britain’s most venerable music institutions this summer, organizers announced today.

The 32-year-old artist has been named curator of the 2026 Meltdown Festival, the Southbank Centre’s artist-led showcase now in its 31st year. Running June 11-21 across the sprawling South Bank arts complex, the 11-day event will see Styles handpick an eclectic lineup spanning music, visual arts, and participatory workshops.

The appointment places Styles in rarefied company. Since its 1993 inception, Meltdown has been helmed by some of popular music’s most influential figures, a roll call that includes David Bowie, Yoko Ono, Patti Smith, The Cure’s Robert Smith, Talking Heads’ David Byrne, Grace Jones, Nick Cave, Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker, and, most recently, British rapper Little Simz in 2025.

“I’m deeply honored to curate the Meltdown Festival, especially for the Southbank Centre’s 75th anniversary year,” Styles said in a statement released Wednesday. “My goal as the curator is to share the music and art that I love and to celebrate the rich history of the venue.”

The singer-songwriter, whose career has evolved from teen pop to critically acclaimed solo artistry, emphasized the democratic mission that has long defined the Southbank Centre’s programming. “We both share a passionate belief that music is a vital part of life,” he said. “It brings us together, and the Southbank Centre has been at the heart of it, providing easy access to great music for the past 75 years.”

Details of the complete lineup remain under wraps until spring, but organizers have hinted at Styles’ characteristically wide-ranging tastes. According to promotional materials, the program will draw from “a broad palette of influences,” spanning pop, soul, electronic, and rock acts alongside emerging British talent. True to the festival’s community-focused ethos, the 2026 edition will also feature free public events aimed at engaging younger audiences.

Styles himself will anchor the festival with a headline performance at the 2,900-capacity Royal Festival Hall, the Southbank Centre’s flagship concert venue. Further details about that marquee appearance are expected in the coming weeks.

Jane Beese, the Southbank Centre’s head of contemporary music, praised the selection. “It’s a real privilege to welcome an artist with the cultural impact and presence of Harry Styles as curator of Meltdown in our 75th anniversary year,” she said. “His openness, warmth, and instinct for collaboration feel perfectly aligned with the spirit at the heart of the festival.”

Beese suggested audiences can expect programming that reflects “the breadth, playfulness, and generosity of his artistic world,” words that seem to nod to Styles’ genre-fluid approach and his reputation for championing diverse voices.

Billed as “the world’s longest-running artist-curated music festival,” Meltdown occupies multiple performance spaces and galleries across the Southbank Centre’s riverside campus, which celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2026.

Last year’s Little Simz-curated edition featured everyone from British hip-hop collective The Streets to American musician Jon Batiste, R&B singer Mahalia, and pop rising star Lola Young, culminating in a finale that saw Simz perform alongside the Chineke! Orchestra, Britain’s first majority-Black and ethnically diverse symphony.

The announcement comes as Styles prepares for a packed 2026. His fourth studio album is Kiss All the Time. Disco, occasionally, is slated for release March 6, while his Together, Together world tour—featuring a staggering 30-night residency at New York’s Madison Square Garden this fall, is set to span seven cities and more than 50 shows.

For the Southbank Centre, Styles’ involvement represents a coup for an institution seeking to balance its storied legacy with contemporary relevance. And for Styles, the curatorial role offers yet another platform to cement his status not just as a chart-topping performer, but as a tastemaker with cultural capital to spare.

The full Meltdown Festival 2026 lineup is expected to be unveiled this spring, with tickets going on sale shortly thereafter.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Harry Styles will curate London’s prestigious Meltdown Festival (June 11-21, 2026), joining an elite roster of past curators including David Bowie, Patti Smith, and David Byrne.

The 11-day event at Southbank Centre marks the venue’s 75th anniversary, with Styles set to headline and program an eclectic mix of established and emerging artists.

This appointment elevates Styles from pop star to cultural tastemaker, positioning him alongside music’s most influential figures in one of the UK’s most respected artist-led festivals.
