Tunde Onakoya, Nigerian chess champion and founder of Chess in Slums Africa, alongside American chess master Shawn Martinez, has broken the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon.
Onakoya announced the confirmation of his new feat via an X-post with a picture of him holding the official certificate from Guinness World Records and a caption that says, “It is possible to do great things from a small place.”
He and his chess partner played for 64 consecutive hours at Times Square, New York, from April 17–20, 2025, surpassing the previous record of 61 hours, 3 minutes, and 34 seconds set by Norwegian players Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad in June 2024.
