Former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, will contest the 2027 Nasarawa State governorship election under the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) after dumping the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement followed claims by the Nasarawa State chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Aliyu Bello, that Adamu had no political party through which he could pursue his governorship ambition.

Adamu’s campaign team said the former police chief had already joined the SDP and would use the party as his platform for the 2027 election.

The development comes months after Adamu left the APC following his defeat in the party’s governorship primary in Nasarawa State.

He resigned his membership of the party in May after the primary, saying the process did not meet his expectations.

Adamu had faulted the conduct of the APC primary, alleging that the process did not properly reflect the wishes of party members at the grassroots.

He subsequently moved away from the party and began exploring another political platform ahead of the governorship election.

In a statement issued on Friday, Otaru Douglas, media and strategic communications director of Adamu’s campaign organisation, said the former IGP’s move to the SDP was a deliberate decision to seek a new platform.

The campaign team said Adamu remained fully committed to contesting the election and was confident of securing victory with the support of voters across the state.

Douglas also criticised the leadership of the APC in Nasarawa, particularly over the party’s governorship primary.

He claimed that the outcome of the exercise had caused dissatisfaction among some APC members and political stakeholders across the state’s 13 local government areas.

The campaign organisation accused the APC chairman of focusing on Adamu instead of dealing with challenges within his own party.

It also rejected claims that criticism from political opponents could force the former police chief to abandon his governorship ambition.

According to the campaign team, Adamu’s political plans are focused on improving governance, strengthening security and promoting development across Nasarawa State.

The former IGP served as Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police before leaving office and later became involved in partisan politics.
