There was panic at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Wednesday after a fire broke out in the Senate wing of the building.
The incident occurred at Hearing Room 107 shortly after the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission concluded the screening of Dr. Zainab Marwa, a nominee representing the North-East on the commission’s board.
The fire reportedly started in the kitchen area of the hearing room but was quickly brought under control before it could spread to other sections of the Senate wing.
Senators Asuquo Ekpenyong and Salihu Mustapha were among those who assisted in containing the fire, helping to prevent further damage.
According to reports, the fire may have been triggered by a microwave that was left on in the kitchen area.
No injuries were recorded during the incident, and normal activities at the National Assembly resumed after the fire was extinguished.
Officials at the scene later instructed journalists to delete photographs and videos taken during the incident.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the cause of the fire.
