FIFA President Gianni Infantino has stated that football “cannot solve geopolitical problems,” as the world football governing body faces mounting pressure to suspend Israel over the ongoing conflict with Palestine.

In a statement issued after a FIFA Council meeting on Thursday, Infantino emphasized the role of football in fostering unity during global crises. “At FIFA, we are committed to using the power of football to bring people together in a divided world,” he said, stressing that “the most important message that football can convey right now is one of peace and unity.”

He added, “FIFA cannot solve geopolitical problems, but it can and must promote football around the world by harnessing its unifying, educational, cultural and humanitarian values.”

Infantino also expressed solidarity with victims of conflicts worldwide, including Gaza, while reiterating that FIFA’s mission remains centered on promoting the game.

The statement comes as critics highlight FIFA’s 2022 ban on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, a decision made just four years after Russia hosted the World Cup finals. Observers note the contrast as FIFA faces pressure to act similarly on Israel.

What you should know

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has resisted calls to suspend Israel over the Palestinian conflict, stating that football cannot resolve geopolitical crises.

While FIFA banned Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, Infantino insists the organization’s focus should remain on using football to promote peace and unity worldwide.
