The Federal Government has disbursed N32 billion through the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) to strengthen primary healthcare services across Nigeria, benefiting more than 8,000 health facilities in the first half of 2025.

The move aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Health Sector Renewal Initiative and the broader Renewed Hope Agenda.

At the 11th Expanded Ministerial Oversight Committee (MOC) meeting on BHCPF in Abuja, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, emphasized that over 37 million health facility visits have been supported under the scheme—marking a vital step toward achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Prof. Pate also highlighted the government’s financial reforms, such as recent executive orders promoting local healthcare manufacturing and the newly enacted tax reform bill, which aim to reduce dependence on foreign aid. Additionally, he pointed to a treatment gap affecting around 50,000 Nigerians with tuberculosis, noting that the 2025 budget has made provisions to address it.

The minister further affirmed that local governments are now fully integrated into the health compact, working collaboratively with state ministries and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) to deepen grassroots health access.

Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, stressed the importance of the MOC in enhancing inter-agency coordination and stakeholder collaboration. He said the engagement of civil society and alignment among agencies have begun yielding measurable results.

Also speaking at the meeting, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, Ekiti State Health Commissioner and Chairman of the Health Commissioners’ Forum, praised the FG’s leadership, saying the collaboration aims to ensure that the supported facilities deliver accessible and quality healthcare and essential supplies.

The MOC meeting, chaired by Prof. Pate, served as a strategic platform to evaluate BHCPF implementation and accelerate reforms under the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp). Stakeholders shared updates and innovations to improve the Fund’s reach and effectiveness across Nigeria.
