Draymond Green Fined $50,000 for Questioning NBA Officials

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green has been fined $50,000 by the NBA for making an “inappropriate comment that questions the integrity of game officials” during a 102-97 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 3 of the Western Conference Semifinals on May 10, 2025, at Chase Center.

The league’s announcement, reported by Shams Charania on X and confirmed by outlets like ESPN and Newsweek, did not specify Green’s exact words but pointed to remarks made late in the fourth quarter, where he appeared to reference the game’s 5.5-point betting spread, saying, “I know what they’re doing,” to teammates.

This latest penalty, part of a career tally of nearly $1 million in fines and $3.2 million in lost salary from suspensions, underscores the NBA’s ongoing efforts to safeguard the credibility of its officiating amid playoff intensity, while highlighting Green’s persistent disciplinary issues as a serial provocateur.

The fine stems from an incident captured on ESPN’s broadcast, where Green, having fouled out, was seen on the sideline discussing the 5.5-point spread with teammates, implying officials were influencing the game’s outcome, per Hoops Rumors. With 15 seconds left and the Warriors trailing 102-94, a three-pointer cut the deficit to five, covering the spread.

The NBA, sensitive to any suggestion of referee bias—especially given gambling’s growing prominence—deemed Green’s comments a violation of its integrity standards, per NBA.com.

This aligns with recent fines for players like Trae Young, Rudy Gobert, and Luka Doncic for similar “money” gestures toward officials, per Newsweek.

Green’s history of run-ins with the league is extensive. Spotrac estimates he has been fined $992,000, with $185,000 for actions toward officials, including a $50,000 fine in 2018 for offensive language and another in 2020 for tampering comments about Devin Booker, per NBA.com and ESPN.

Suspensions, like missing Game 5 of the 2016 NBA Finals for flagrant fouls and a 2023 playoff game for stepping on Domantas Sabonis, have cost him $3.2 million, per Winnipeg Free Press.

His on-court antics, from a 2023 chokehold on Gobert to punching teammate Jordan Poole in 2022, have polarized fans, with some on X, like @JonnyRoot_, calling it a “sportsmanship issue,” while others, like @HaterReport_, marvel at his ability to avoid ejections.

The fine comes at a tough time for the Warriors, trailing 3-1 in the series without Stephen Curry, sidelined by a hamstring injury, per Andscape.

Green, averaging 10.8 points and 4.3 assists, remains a defensive linchpin but risks a one-game suspension with two more technical fouls, having accrued five this postseason, per Yahoo Sports.

What you should know

The NBA’s swift action reflects its broader push to maintain officiating credibility, especially after Green’s Game 2 technical for striking Naz Reid, which sparked fan backlash and a Timberwolves probe into racially charged comments against him, per CNN.

Nigeria, hosting the Rabat Process, might note the NBA’s firm governance as a model for managing disputes.

Green’s $50,000 fine, though a fraction of his $25 million annual salary, adds to a narrative of controversy that defines his career.

As the Warriors face a must-win Game 5, his ability to channel his intensity without crossing lines will be critical, but his latest penalty suggests that battle is far from won.
