Declan Rice’s late equalizer salvaged a point for Arsenal in a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, but the result dealt another setback to the Gunners’ fading Premier League title hopes.
Bruno Fernandes had put United ahead with a stunning free-kick in first-half stoppage time, but Rice’s well-taken goal 16 minutes from time denied Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim a much-needed victory.
Arsenal’s Title Hopes All But Over
The draw leaves Arsenal 15 points behind league leaders Liverpool, with only one game in hand, shifting their focus toward securing a Champions League spot for next season. Meanwhile, United remain stuck in 14th place, struggling to find consistency under Amorim.
Sunday marked Mikel Arteta’s 200th Premier League game in charge of Arsenal. His 118 wins in that time put him behind only Pep Guardiola, José Mourinho, Jürgen Klopp, and Alex Ferguson in terms of success in English football. However, Arsenal’s wait for a league title looks set to continue, with the club on course to finish as runners-up for a third consecutive season.
Fernandes Stuns Arsenal with Free-Kick
Despite missing key attacking players like Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal dominated possession early but lacked a natural centre-forward. Midfielder Mikel Merino, deployed as a makeshift striker, fired wide in the opening stages.
United, struggling for goals all season, found inspiration through their captain, Fernandes. Just before halftime, the Portuguese playmaker curled a brilliant free-kick over the wall and past Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, whose positioning will likely come under scrutiny.
Rice Levels It Late
After the break, Raya redeemed himself with key saves to deny Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee as United pushed for a second goal.
Arteta introduced Martinelli in search of an equalizer, but it was Rice who delivered, drilling a shot past André Onana after being set up by Jurrien Timber.
United’s Rasmus Højlund, dropped to the bench after failing to score in his last 19 appearances, had two late chances but was denied by Arsenal’s desperate defending. Raya then produced another crucial stop to prevent Fernandes from securing all three points for United in stoppage time.
Champions League Race Heats Up
While the draw did little for Arsenal’s title challenge, it strengthened their position in the race for Champions League qualification. They now sit four points ahead of third-placed Nottingham Forest and hold an eight-point cushion over fifth-placed Manchester City.
