Former England football captain David Beckham has officially been knighted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle, describing the event as his “proudest moment.”

Beckham, 50, received the honour for his outstanding contributions to sport and charity. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder, who earned 115 caps for England, attended the ceremony at Windsor alongside his wife, Victoria Beckham, and his parents, Ted and Sandra.

Speaking after the event, Beckham said it was “quite a moment” for a boy from East London to be “here at Windsor Castle, being honoured by His Majesty the King—the most important and the most respected institution in the world.”

“This is without doubt my proudest moment,” he told the PA news agency.

Known for his impeccable sense of style, Beckham wore a custom grey suit designed by his wife, Victoria, the pop star-turned-fashion designer. The couple’s elegant appearance drew attention, with Victoria accompanying her husband as he received the honour.

Beckham revealed that King Charles complimented his attire during the ceremony, saying, “He’s kind of the most elegantly dressed man that I know, so he inspired quite a few of my looks over the years, and he definitely inspired this look.”

He added, “I looked at old pictures of him when he was quite young in morning suits and I was like, OK, that’s what I want to wear, so I gave it to my wife and she did it.”

The football legend expressed deep admiration for the monarchy, noting that the knighthood carried immense personal significance. “I’ve been very obviously lucky in my career to have won what I’ve won and done what I’ve done but to receive an honour like this, of a knight, is beyond anything that I ever thought that I would receive,” he said.

Beckham, who has been referred to as “Sir David” since the honour was announced in June, joins a select group of British athletes to be knighted. His wife, Victoria, now bears the title “Lady Beckham.”

The recognition marks the culmination of Beckham’s long and successful journey, transcending football to become a global icon in sport, fashion, and business. His knighthood had long been anticipated, especially after his key role in helping London secure the 2012 Olympic Games.

However, reports indicated that his nomination was previously delayed due to concerns over his involvement in an alleged tax avoidance scheme. He was later cleared, paving the way for his long-awaited recognition.

What You Should Know

David Beckham’s knighthood honours his remarkable impact on sport, philanthropy, and culture.

From his rise at Manchester United to global fame with Real Madrid and LA Galaxy, Beckham’s influence extends beyond football. His fashion ventures, charitable efforts, and enduring public appeal have solidified his legacy as one of Britain’s most iconic figures.
