American R&B singer Chris Brown was granted bail on Wednesday by Southwark Crown Court in London, following charges of grievous bodily harm with intent stemming from an alleged assault at a nightclub in Hanover Square on February 19, 2023.
The Grammy-winning artist, known for hits like “Kiss, Kiss” and “Run It!,” was ordered to pay a £5 million bail guarantee, with strict conditions allowing him to proceed with his international tour scheduled to begin June 8 in Amsterdam.
Judge Tony Baumgartner stipulated that Brown must surrender his passport when not traveling, reside at a court-approved address, and avoid contact with the alleged victim, Abraham Diah, or the nightclub where the incident occurred.
Failure to return to the UK for his scheduled concerts starting June 15 will result in the forfeiture of the £5 million bond. Brown, who was not present at the hearing, is also barred from visiting the Hanover Square venue.
The alleged assault took place during Brown’s UK tour in early 2023. According to court documents, the victim was reportedly struck multiple times with a bottle before being pursued, punched, and kicked.
Brown was detained by police in the early hours of May 13, 2025, at a five-star hotel in Manchester, where he had arrived by private jet. His co-defendant, US national Omololu Akinlolu, 38, faces the same charge of grievous bodily harm with intent. Both are scheduled to appear in court again on June 20.
Brown’s legal troubles are not new. The singer, who rose to fame in the mid-2000s with his smooth R&B vocals and later ventures into rap, has faced a series of legal issues over the years.
Most notably, he was convicted of felony assault in 2009 for attacking his then-girlfriend, pop star Rihanna, an incident that forced her to miss that year’s Grammy Awards.
The Virginia native, who began his career singing in a local church choir, has since struggled to shake a reputation marred by allegations of abuse, despite his continued success in the music industry.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
The bail decision allows Brown to fulfill his tour commitments, which include performances across Europe, including France, and the United States in 2025. However, the looming court date and the severity of the charges cast a shadow over his upcoming engagements. The case has reignited discussions about Brown’s history of violence and the impact on his career, with fans and critics alike awaiting further developments.
