Chelsea has officially completed the signing of Portuguese midfielder Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon, with the transfer confirmed on Monday.
The move, valued at £18 million (approximately $25 million), marks another addition to the Blues’ growing roster of young talents.
At just 20 years old, Essugo has already begun to make a name for himself in European football. He spent the previous season on loan with Spanish outfit Las Palmas, where he gained valuable first-team experience despite the team’s unfortunate relegation from La Liga.
The midfielder is expected to be available for Chelsea’s squad selection when they compete in the FIFA Club World Cup later this month, providing manager Enzo Maresca with additional options in midfield as the club targets silverware on the global stage.
Essugo, a product of Sporting Lisbon’s youth system, made history in March 2021 by becoming the youngest player to represent the club’s senior team at just 16 years old. Since then, his development has drawn attention from top European clubs, with Chelsea moving early to secure his signature.
This transfer follows up on a pair of deals Chelsea initiated in March, which included agreements for both Essugo and fellow Sporting prospect Geovany Quenda. While Essugo joins Chelsea immediately, Quenda will remain in Portugal with Sporting until the end of the 2025/26 season before making his switch to Stamford Bridge in a deal reportedly worth £44 million.
In a further show of intent in the transfer market, Chelsea are reportedly on the verge of finalizing another deal — this time for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap. The move, said to be valued at £30 million, is expected to be completed in the coming days as the club looks to bolster its attacking options ahead of the new season.
The acquisitions of Essugo and the soon-to-arrive Quenda and Delap reflect Chelsea’s strategy of investing heavily in emerging talent, as they look to build a squad capable of long-term success both domestically and in Europe.
