Chelsea have successfully secured the signing of English striker Liam Delap from Ipswich Town in a high-profile transfer reportedly worth £30 million ($41 million), fending off competition from fellow Premier League clubs.
The 22-year-old joins the Blues after an impressive season at Portman Road, where he found the net 12 times in the top flight, although his efforts weren’t enough to prevent Ipswich’s relegation to the Championship after just one season in the Premier League.
Delap had also attracted interest from Manchester United and Everton, both of whom were said to be prepared to meet the release clause in the England under-21 forward’s contract. However, Chelsea managed to win the race for his signature, further strengthening their attacking line-up ahead of the Club World Cup set to begin in the United States later this month.
In an official statement from Chelsea, Delap expressed excitement about the move. “I understand the stature of this club and can see the trajectory it is on with these players and the head coach,” he said. The young forward, who has signed a six-year deal with the West London side, added, “It’s going to be an incredible place for me to develop, and I hope to achieve amazing things here and help the club win more trophies.”
Chelsea are heading into a new season on the back of renewed optimism. They secured a fourth-place finish in the Premier League, marking their return to the Champions League after a two-year absence. The team, led by Enzo Maresca, also lifted silverware last week with a resounding 4-1 win over Real Betis in the Conference League final—an early highlight in the Italian manager’s tenure.
Earlier in the season, Chelsea appeared to be within striking range of eventual champions Liverpool before experiencing a dip in form. They closed out the campaign strongly, clinching a top-five finish, though it was evident that the lack of a consistent goal scorer hindered their momentum.
Senegal’s Nicolas Jackson, the team’s main striker, managed just 10 goals in 30 appearances, while Christopher Nkunku’s underwhelming spell at the club appears set to end this summer.
Delap, who is the son of former Stoke City midfielder Rory Delap, began his career at Manchester City but found limited opportunities under Pep Guardiola. He went on to gain experience through loan spells at Stoke, Preston, and Hull before joining Ipswich for a fee of up to £20 million following their promotion last year. Despite Ipswich’s overall struggles in the Premier League—finishing with just 22 points—Delap stood out as one of the few bright spots in their campaign.
Chelsea are preparing for a busy summer, with the Club World Cup set to kick off on June 14. The Blues are grouped alongside Flamengo, LAFC, and ES Tunis in the opening stage of the tournament.
