Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking another major political shakeup within the opposition camp.

Governor Diri made the announcement on Wednesday during a meeting held at the executive council chamber of the Bayelsa State Government House.

According to reports from Vanguard’s Bayelsa correspondent, the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ngobere, along with 18 other PDP lawmakers, also tendered their resignation letters, signaling a mass exit from the party’s leadership structure in the state.

Governor Diri’s decision to quit the PDP comes barely 24 hours after the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), intensifying speculation about growing unrest within the PDP.

As of the time this report was filed, Governor Diri has not publicly disclosed his next political move or the party he intends to join.

With Diri’s resignation, the PDP continues to lose ground, having already seen three of its governors defect to the APC this year alone. The latest development leaves the party with just eight governors across the federation.

Meanwhile, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, confirmed the news in a post shared on his verified social media handle, further validating earlier reports about the governor’s departure from the party.

Details are still emerging as political analysts anticipate further developments in the coming days.

What you should know

Douye Diri, a former senator and now the immediate past governor of Bayelsa State, has been a key figure in the PDP’s South-South structure.

His resignation, along with that of the state assembly leadership, represents a significant blow to the party’s influence in the Niger Delta region and underscores the growing wave of defections that has weakened the PDP’s political base nationwide.
