Apple has officially announced the launch of the iPhone 16e, the latest addition to its iPhone 16 series, with pre-orders set to begin on February 21 and availability scheduled for February 28, 2025. The new device is powered by Apple’s cutting-edge A18 chip and marks the first time the tech giant has developed its own cellular modem, the C1, which promises better integration with iOS, improved power efficiency, and enhanced network performance.

The iPhone 16e also supports Apple Intelligence, a suite of AI-powered features designed to elevate the user experience while maintaining strong privacy protections. During the announcement, Kaiann Drance, Apple’s VP of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing, expressed excitement about the device, describing it as a powerful yet more affordable option that encapsulates the features users love about the iPhone 16 series. Drance highlighted that the iPhone 16e delivers breakthrough battery life, rapid performance, an innovative 2-in-1 camera system, and the added advantage of Apple Intelligence, thereby broadening the iPhone experience to even more people.

Available in two matte finishes, black and white, the iPhone 16e comes in three storage variants—128GB, 256GB, and 512GB—ensuring a range of options for different user needs. In terms of photography, the device is equipped with a 48-megapixel Fusion camera that provides high-resolution photos with optical zoom quality, thanks to its integrated 2x Telephoto lens that offers additional versatility for enthusiasts. Its design is further enhanced by an IP68 rating for splash, water, and dust resistance, and the front is protected by Apple’s Ceramic Shield, which the company claims is “tougher than any smartphone glass.”

Beyond these hardware advancements, the iPhone 16e is designed to harness the capabilities of Apple Intelligence. This new system introduces features like the Clean Up tool, which helps users eliminate distracting elements from their photos, and a natural language search function integrated within the Photos app. Apple has also introduced Image Playground, a creative tool that allows users to craft personalized emojis—referred to as Genmoji—and generate AI-based visuals. An exciting new addition is the enhanced Action Button, now featuring Visual Intelligence, which empowers users to point their camera at various objects such as animals, plants, restaurants, or event flyers to receive immediate information or perform AI-powered actions reminiscent of Google Lens. Moreover, Siri has received a significant upgrade in its conversational abilities, now integrating ChatGPT. Apple emphasizes that users can access ChatGPT without the need to create an account, with built-in privacy protections ensuring that IP addresses remain obscured and that OpenAI does not store requests.

This new launch fits into a broader context of the iPhone 16 family, which includes the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, which debuted in September 2024, feature 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED displays respectively, with aluminum frames and a Ceramic Shield on the front, available in a variety of colors including Black, Pink, Teal, Ultramarine, and White. These models boast a camera system that features a 48-megapixel main sensor paired with a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and they offer robust battery life, with the iPhone 16 providing up to 22 hours of video playback and the 16 Plus extending that to 27 hours. The more premium iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, with 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays respectively, are crafted with a microblasted titanium frame and are available in a range of elegant finishes such as Black Titanium, Desert Titanium, Natural Titanium, and White Titanium.

Overall, the iPhone 16e embodies Apple’s commitment to combining advanced technology with affordability, ensuring that more users can access the innovative features and enhanced performance that define the iPhone 16 series.
