The All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken an early lead in the just-concluded July 12 Local Government elections across Lagos State, securing key chairmanship and councillorship positions as results trickle in from the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).

The elections, held across 13,325 polling units in 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs, were peaceful but marked by low voter turnout. A total of 57 Chairmanship and Vice Chairmanship slots and 376 Councillorship seats were up for grabs.

Of the 19 registered political parties, only 15 fielded candidates. The APC contested all available seats, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) participated in 45 councils and 259 wards. The Labour Party (LP) was present in 22 LGAs and 130 wards, with other parties like ZLP, AAC, AA, and YPP fielding fewer contenders.

APC Sweeps Early Results

In Lagos Island LGA, APC’s Taiwo Oyekan clinched victory with 28,385 votes, defeating PDP’s Ajibade Olusegun, who polled just 1,271 votes.

In Amuwo-Odofin, APC’s Prince Lanre Sanusi won by a wide margin, securing 24,926 votes against LP’s Engr. Seyi Ipinlaye’s 1,962.

In Agege, APC’s Tunde Azeez, popularly known as “Disco,” emerged victorious with 31,503 votes, while APM and ZLP candidates trailed with 86 and 10 votes respectively.

APC Candidates Praise Process

Adebayo Adefuye, APC’s candidate for Yaba LCDA, hailed the electoral process as smooth and transparent. He unveiled his “Yaba tuntun” (New Yaba) agenda after voting and commended the Federal Government’s stance on local government financial autonomy.

Sanwo-Olu Applauds Lagosians

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressed gratitude to voters and stakeholders in a statement titled “Thank You, Lagos For Peaceful Local Government Elections.”

“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to all Lagosians who came out today to perform their civic duty,” he said, urging political actors to remain calm as results continue to roll in.

He also praised security agencies, electoral officials, and the media for their professionalism throughout the exercise, emphasizing that peaceful elections are crucial as Lagos approaches the 2027 general elections.

With more results expected in the coming days, the APC appears on course to retain its dominance at the grassroots level in Lagos.

What you should know

Despite low voter turnout, the APC is poised to maintain its stronghold in Lagos after sweeping early results in the July 12 local elections.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of democratic participation, while LASIEC continues to announce outcomes across the state’s 57 councils.
