The Anambra State Police Command has declared a total restriction of vehicular movement across the state on Saturday, November 8, 2025, the day of the state’s governorship election.

In a statement released on Friday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the restriction would be in effect from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., affecting all roads within and outside the state, including interstate highways.

Ikenga explained that the measure, agreed upon during a meeting of security service commanders in Anambra on November 5, aims to prevent the movement of political thugs and criminal elements who might attempt to disrupt the election.

“The restriction applies to all forms of motorised transportation, including private vehicles, commercial vehicles, trucks, tricycles, motorcycles, and shuttle buses,” the statement read.

He further advised interstate travellers to seek alternative routes during the restriction period. However, essential workers, including INEC officials, accredited journalists and observers, medical personnel, emergency responders, and utility service providers, will be exempted, provided they carry valid identification and clearance tags.

Ikenga urged residents to comply with the directive, emphasizing that it is designed to protect lives and property and ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process. He also encouraged voters to cooperate fully with security personnel deployed to maintain order throughout the state.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned political parties, candidates, and voters against engaging in electoral malpractice or any act that could breach the peace during the polls.

In a statement posted on its official X handle on Friday, INEC outlined prohibited conduct at polling units, warning violators of legal consequences.

“No candidate shall canvass for votes, solicit for the vote of any voter, persuade any voter not to vote for any particular candidate, or shout slogans concerning the election,” the commission stated.

INEC also banned the possession of offensive weapons, the wearing of party-branded attire or facial decorations intended to intimidate voters, and the use of vehicles displaying party symbols.

The commission further directed voters to leave the polling area immediately after voting, warning that loitering, snatching, or destruction of election materials, as well as blaring sirens, would be considered offenses.
