The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has warned that controversial Nigerian musician Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, may face legal action after ignoring a formal summons from the agency.
The summons followed public outrage over a viral video in which the singer claimed to have had sexual relations with a 15-year-old girl.
The agency issued the invitation last Wednesday through a letter signed by its Head of Cybercrime Response Team, Ngamaraju Mangzha.
Speed Darlington was expected to appear at NAPTIP’s headquarters in Abuja by 9:00 a.m. on Friday, but agency officials have confirmed he failed to attend.
Speaking anonymously, a NAPTIP official confirmed the singer’s no-show and hinted that enforcement measures may be taken. “As of now, we are still waiting. If we don’t see him, we will take action based on the notice issued. The last paragraph is very clear,” the official said.
The agency’s letter had explicitly warned that noncompliance could lead to legal steps, stating: “Please, be informed that your cooperation is critical to ensuring a fair and thorough enquiry into the matter and failure to honour this invitation may result in further legal action.”
Another unnamed official revealed that no communication has been received from Darlington to explain his absence.
The official also explained that after the controversial video surfaced online, concerned citizens began tagging NAPTIP and the Lagos State Government. However, Lagos authorities referred the case to NAPTIP’s national office due to jurisdictional limitations, stating they could not confirm the offence occurred within Lagos.
NAPTIP’s Chief Press Officer, Adekoye Vincent, confirmed that the agency’s Director-General, Binta Bello, is personally overseeing the matter because of its seriousness, especially concerning child rights and potential sexual exploitation.
“We are alarmed. Our DG is monitoring developments very closely. This involves a minor, possible sexual abuse, and a clear violation of human rights,” Adekoye said.
He further condemned another recent video from the singer, in which he reportedly stated that if he had known the backlash involving a 15-year-old would be so intense, he would have chosen a 12-year-old instead. “That’s not just disturbing — it’s an outright admission,” Adekoye stressed.
When asked about possible next steps, including whether the singer could be arrested or prosecuted, Adekoye replied, “His failure to appear will guide our next legal move. Whether it results in prosecution or arrest, we are deeply concerned.”
As public pressure mounts and human rights groups call for swift action, NAPTIP has reiterated its commitment to upholding the law and ensuring justice is served, especially in cases involving minors.
