Trent Alexander-Arnold announced on Monday that he will part ways with his boyhood club Liverpool when his contract concludes at the end of the current campaign, describing the decision as the “hardest” of his life.
The England international, who played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s recent Premier League triumph, is strongly rumored to be heading to Real Madrid on a free transfer.
“After 20 years at Liverpool Football Club, now is the time for me to confirm that I will be leaving at the end of the season,” the 26-year-old posted on X.
“This is easily the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life.”
The Reds’ Premier League victory brought them level with long-standing rivals Manchester United, with both clubs now holding 20 top-flight titles.
“I know many of you have wondered why or been frustrated that I haven’t spoken about this yet, but it was always my intention to keep my full focus on the team’s best interests, which was securing No. 20,” Alexander-Arnold said.
“This club has been my whole life — my whole world — for 20 years. From the Academy right through until now, the support and love I have felt from everyone inside and outside of the club will stay with me forever.
“I will forever be in debt to you all. My love for this club will never die.”
Since making his senior debut in 2016, Alexander-Arnold has featured in 352 matches for Liverpool, scoring 23 goals and claiming eight major trophies.
“Alexander-Arnold will depart with our gratitude and appreciation for his contribution during a sustained period of success,” Liverpool noted in a statement on their official website.
What you should know
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s decision to leave Liverpool in 2025 comes after a historic season that saw the club match Manchester United’s 20-title record.
In contrast, the 2024 season had ended without silverware and with no official word on his future. His 2025 departure, however, was timed after delivering one final triumph for his team.
While the 2024 campaign was filled with speculation, this year brought clarity and closure. Over two decades, Alexander-Arnold rose through Liverpool’s ranks to become a symbol of their modern success, collecting multiple titles and establishing himself as a fan favorite.
If his move to Real Madrid materializes, it will follow the tradition of top English talent transitioning to European football’s elite.
