The Senate has expressed readiness to work closely with the Executive to ease socio-political tensions in the country, with particular focus on resolving the political crisis in Rivers State.

In a statement released on Monday ahead of the National Assembly’s resumption of plenary, Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, said the Senate’s objective is to mediate among key stakeholders in order to promote national stability and foster reconciliation nationwide.

Bamidele also revealed that topping the Senate’s agenda upon resumption is the further consideration of the 2024 Tax Reform Bills. He emphasized that the proposed reforms are critical for overhauling the country’s tax system and improving revenue generation to support governance at all levels.

“The passage has become imperative to reform the country’s tax regime and shore up the revenue of the federation. This will also help governments at all levels to implement projects and deliver the dividends of democracy,” the statement read.

Raising alarm over the resurgence of insecurity in states such as Benue, Borno, Katsina, and Plateau, Bamidele noted that the legislature would strengthen consultations with security agencies. The goal, he said, is to develop new tactics to combat terrorism and restore peace in the affected regions.

He also referenced recent presidential appointments made during the recess, including nominees for the South-South Development Commission. The Senate is expected to begin screening those nominees in the coming days.

In closing, Bamidele pointed out that several key bills relating to critical sectors of the economy remain pending. He assured that the Senate would expedite their passage and encourage citizen engagement through public hearings.

What you should know
The Senate is prioritizing national reconciliation, with particular attention to resolving the political turmoil in Rivers State.

Alongside this, lawmakers are set to deliberate on the 2024 Tax Reform Bills, aiming to revamp the nation’s tax system.

Concerns over escalating insecurity in several states have also prompted plans for renewed dialogue with security agencies.

In addition, the Senate is preparing to screen newly appointed officials and accelerate the passage of strategic bills to support economic and institutional development.
