As the Nigerian Senate resumed plenary on Tuesday after a 10-week recess, Senate President Godswill Akpabio delivered an opening address urging lawmakers to renew their commitment to accountability, discipline, and purposeful governance.

Addressing his colleagues, Akpabio reaffirmed the Senate’s duty to the Nigerian people, stating, “To the citizens of Nigeria, we hear you. You asked us not for excuses, but for results. We will remain accountable and responsive.”

He emphasized the need to protect the integrity of democratic institutions, warning that “Those who seek to weaken the legislature seek to delete the structure of democracy itself.”

Describing governance as a “sacred duty of trust and not theatrics,” the Senate President called for competence over popularity, asserting that “If our politics must remain, let us choose the right men for the service of our nation, not the loudest voices or those who seek office as an ornament, but those worthy of the people’s trust.”

Akpabio also urged swift government response to ongoing flood disasters across several regions, assuring affected citizens that the 10th Senate remains committed to addressing the crisis.

On the economy, he noted that Nigeria’s oil production has improved and credited President Bola Tinubu’s administration for stabilizing state finances. “Today, no state governor is borrowing to pay salaries,” he said, while calling on lawmakers to uphold fiscal discipline.

Tuesday’s session also saw the return of embattled Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central, who rejoined proceedings after a six-month suspension. Additionally, several senators appeared in the chamber dressed in Palestinian colors to show solidarity with the people of Palestine.

The National Assembly’s annual recess, which began in July, is a routine part of its legislative calendar, allowing lawmakers to balance national service with constituency responsibilities and personal commitments.

What you should know

Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s address marked a renewed call for integrity and responsible leadership within the National Assembly.

His emphasis on accountability, democracy, and competence reflects growing expectations for lawmakers to deliver tangible results amid Nigeria’s ongoing economic and social challenges.
