Comedian and actor Russell Brand was released on bail after a brief appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, facing charges of sexual offenses, including rape, stemming from alleged incidents between 1999 and 2005 involving four women.
The charges, filed by post last month, include one count each of rape, oral rape, and indecent assault, plus two counts of sexual assault, as reported by Sky News.
The allegations emerged from a 2023 investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches. Brand, now a U.S. resident, confirmed his identity and bail conditions during the hearing, speaking minimally.
Dressed in a partially unbuttoned black shirt, black jeans, and sunglasses, he remained composed amid media attention and police presence. He denies the accusations, asserting he has never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity.
Specific charges include a 1999 rape in Bournemouth, a 2004 oral rape and sexual assault in Westminster (involving non-consensual touching of a woman’s breasts), a 2001 indecent assault in Westminster (grabbing a woman’s arm and pulling her toward a toilet), and another sexual assault in Westminster between 2004 and 2005.
The case was referred to the Crown Court (Old Bailey) for a hearing on May 30. Brand provided his U.S. and U.K. addresses, thanked the judge, and left.
In a video on X, he expressed gratitude for the chance to defend himself in court and aims to prove his innocence. Brand, a former BBC Radio 2 host (2006–2008) and Big Brother presenter, was previously married to Katy Perry (2010–2012) and is now married to Laura Gallacher, with whom he has two daughters.
