The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the addition of a new category for ‘Stunt Design’ in the 100th edition of the Academy Awards. The new category will include films released in 2027 for ‘Achievement in Stunt Design,’ as stated by the Academy’s Board of Governors.

Bill Kramer, CEO of the Academy, alongside President Janet Yang, brought forward the importance and historical context such work has in cinema, stating it has been one of the many pivotal parts of a movie ever since it began. They gave props to the creativity and technicality of stunt workers by saying this award makes room for the critical efforts that honor the tireless work of these professionals while sculpting this award.

Advocacy for the award will continue as numerous contesting entities have fought for the recognition of those who do the physically dangerous work through direct contact, such as sound engineering and visual and makeup artistry. The policies will include detailed eligibility rules, voter protocols, and set criteria for the award.

The decision is in line with the Academy of Motion Pictures’ recent attempts to evolve, paving the way towards recognizing the diverse nature of 21st-century filmmaking.
