Skales Cites Fear of “Jungle Justice” as Reason for Nigeria’s Lower Crime Rate Compared to UK

Nigerian artist Skales has controversially claimed that Nigeria’s lower crime rate in contrast to that of the United Kingdom stems from the threat of violent extrajudicial punishments, often referred to as “jungle justice.”

During an interview on Just Vibes, Skales argued that criminals in Nigeria are cautious of brutal mob retaliation if caught. “Crime is lower here than in the UK because [criminals] know they could face jungle justice. People burn you alive,” he stated. He suggested this fear makes Nigerian criminals “less bold” than their UK counterparts

However, the singer clarified that he does not subscribe to such vigilante practices, acknowledging their unlawful and extreme nature.

Shifting to music, Skales also discussed the fluidity of Afrobeats as a genre, describing it as an “umbrella term” rather than a rigid style. “No one can define exactly how Afrobeats should sound. It blends diverse influences,” he explained, highlighting its versatility and global appeal.
