A four-story building under construction collapsed in the early hours of Sunday morning on Ogbalu Street, Independence Layout, Enugu, killing at least one person and sending emergency services scrambling to the scene.
The structure came down at about 6 a.m., while several workers were reportedly asleep on-site—a common practice on Nigerian construction sites, where labourers often lodge at unfinished buildings to guard equipment and materials overnight.
Of the six people said to have been at the site, one had stepped out shortly before the collapse, narrowly avoiding the disaster. Four others were pulled from the rubble alive, while rescuers recovered one body.
The four survivors are currently receiving treatment at the Enugu State Teaching Hospital, according to the Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA), which is coordinating the emergency response alongside the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Nigerian Red Cross, and the Police.
Rescue operations were ongoing as of Sunday afternoon, with excavators still working at the site to determine whether anyone remained trapped beneath the debris. Officials cautioned that initial casualty figures were drawn from third-party accounts and that the full scale of the incident had yet to be confirmed.
Adding to the gravity of the incident, an official involved in the rescue effort told reporters that the collapse appeared linked to suspected structural defects, noting that the site had previously been sealed by the ECTDA following an earlier inspection.
The inspection had reportedly flagged serious defects in the building’s structural design, particularly around the distribution and connection of its support columns, raising pointed questions about how construction continued despite the earlier red flags.
The exact cause of Sunday’s collapse remains officially unconfirmed. But the incident has reignited long-simmering anger over Enugu’s construction sector, where building collapses have become a recurring tragedy blamed on poor soil assessment, weak enforcement of approved plans, and inadequate oversight by local planning authorities.
Residents and safety advocates are once again demanding tougher regulatory action to prevent a repeat of Sunday’s disaster.
