The burial of Nollywood actress Temitope “Tope” Osoba, which had been scheduled to hold on Thursday, August 13, 2026, was called off less than 24 hours before mourners were due to gather, deepening the sense of unease that has trailed the actress’s death since it was first announced on August 5.
Osoba’s funeral service had been slated for Saint James Anglican Church in Iperu Remo, Ogun State, followed by interment at the Iperu Remo Cemetery. But on Wednesday evening, a joint statement from the Osoba and Awonuga families, posted to the late actress’s official Instagram page, announced that the ceremony would “be postponed until further notice.”
The announcement followed a solemn gathering the night before a candlelight procession and artistes’ tribute night held at LTV 8, Ikeja, under the theme “An Evening of Love, Music and Memories.”
The event drew tributes, prayers, and songs from colleagues, including Toyosi Adesanya, Jigan Babaoja, Alesh Sanni, and Foluke Daramola, though observers noted the conspicuous absence of several prominent figures from the Yoruba film industry.
In their statement, the families cited the need for more time to conclude “necessary matters” before fixing a new date, appealing to friends, colleagues, fans, and well-wishers for patience and continued prayers “during this difficult and sensitive period.”
They thanked those who turned out for the candlelight night and everyone who has stood by the family since Osoba’s passing and pledged that further updates would come through official channels.
The families have not publicly linked the postponement to controversy swirling around the circumstances of Osoba’s death. However, the timing is notable: actor Yomi Fabiyi had publicly urged the family to delay the burial until police concluded an investigation and an autopsy was carried out.
Separately, actress Toyosi Adesanya accused the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria of discouraging some colleagues from supporting Osoba’s burial, insisting the late actress was a registered member of the association’s Eti-Osa chapter.
For now, no new burial date has been set, and the cause of Osoba’s death remains undisclosed by the family.
As Nollywood continues to process the loss of an actress fondly remembered for her energy on screen, attention is likely to remain fixed on whether the postponement signals a push for answers or simply more time for a grieving family to lay their own to rest.
