Ruger Claps Back at TikToker’s Death Wish

Afrobeats star Ruger has found himself at the center of a heated social media exchange after a TikTok user publicly wished for his death, prompting a sharp and controversial response from the singer on X (formerly Twitter).

The controversy began when a female TikTok user posted a video criticizing one of Ruger’s songs, labeling it “misogynistic and homophobic.” The clip, which quickly gained traction online, saw the user go a step further than a typical critique, declaring, in Pidgin English, that Ruger’s death was “the only thing” that could help her mental health.

The remark, delivered in a now-viral clip, struck many viewers as an extreme reaction to a music critique, and it didn’t take long for it to reach Ruger himself.

Rather than letting the comment slide, the “Bounce” hitmaker took to X to address it directly and did so with characteristic bluntness. “I think I get a pass for her wishing me dead,” he wrote, framing his forthcoming remarks as justified retaliation. He went on to preemptively address a portion of his audience: “So apologies to the feminists and body positivity activists.”

Ruger then pivoted from defending himself to criticizing the TikTok user’s appearance, suggesting she should redirect her concern toward her diet rather than his music. “Instead of her being worried about her high intake of okpa,” he wrote, “she is on the verge of getting a triple chin.”

The exchange has since ignited debate across Nigerian social media, with reactions splitting along familiar lines. Some users have argued that wishing death on anyone regardless of the reason crosses a line that justifies a strong response and that Ruger was well within his rights to hit back.

Others have criticized the singer for resorting to body-shaming rather than addressing the substance of the original critique, arguing that mocking someone’s weight does little to counter accusations of misogyny and instead reinforces them.

The original criticism that Ruger’s music carries misogynistic and homophobic undertones has not been directly addressed by the singer, whose response focused almost entirely on the death wish and the user’s appearance rather than the content of her original complaint.

As of this report, neither Ruger nor the TikTok user has issued further comment, though both the original video and Ruger’s response continue to circulate widely, drawing thousands of reactions, quote posts, and comments from fans and critics alike.

The incident adds to a growing pattern of Nigerian celebrities engaging directly and often combatively with online critics, a trend that continues to fuel debate about accountability, free expression, and the boundaries of public discourse on Nigerian social media.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

A musician’s public feud with a critic escalated from a debate over song lyrics into a personal attack on someone’s body, and in the process, the actual complaint about misogyny and homophobia in his music went completely unanswered. The death wish gave Ruger an easy out to dodge the real criticism.
