Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested an Italy-based businessman identified as Joseph Cyril at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, after he was allegedly caught attempting to smuggle 1.51 kilograms of cocaine out of the country to Italy.

According to preliminary information from the anti-narcotics agency, Cyril was intercepted during a routine outward screening of passengers and luggage bound for Italy.

Sources within the agency say the suspect had concealed the illicit substance in a manner designed to evade detection, though the exact method used has not yet been publicly disclosed pending further investigation.

The arrest is said to be part of the NDLEA’s ongoing surveillance operations at major international airports across the country, where officers have intensified scrutiny of outbound and inbound passengers as part of efforts to curb the use of Nigerian airspace as a transit route for illicit drugs.

Cyril, described by the agency as a businessman based in Italy, is reported to have been on a scheduled international flight when he was flagged by narcotics detection personnel.

He has since been taken into custody for questioning, with the NDLEA expected to proceed with a full forensic analysis of the seized substance to confirm its composition and purity.

The NDLEA has, in recent years, repeatedly warned that Nigeria’s international airports remain targets for drug traffickers seeking to move narcotics to Europe and other destinations, often employing couriers, ingestion methods, or concealment within luggage and personal effects.

Officials have consistently urged airlines and airport staff to remain vigilant and report suspicious behaviour.

As investigations continue, the agency is expected to release further details regarding the circumstances of Cyril’s arrest, his alleged network, if any, and the charges he may eventually face in line with Nigeria’s drug trafficking laws, which prescribe stiff penalties for the importation, exportation, and trafficking of illicit substances.

This latest seizure adds to a growing list of interceptions recorded by the NDLEA in its ongoing crackdown on narcotics trafficking through the country’s airports, as authorities continue efforts to dismantle drug syndicates operating along the Nigeria–Europe corridor.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The arrest of Joseph Cyril at Enugu Airport underscores a troubling reality Nigerian airports remain active transit points for cocaine trafficking to Europe, even involving nationals based abroad.

Vigilance at points of exit is working, but it also signals that drug syndicates continue to exploit international travel routes, reinforcing the need for sustained airport surveillance and stricter enforcement to curb Nigeria’s link in the global narcotics trade.
