The family of Nollywood actress Temitope Osoba, popularly known as Tope Osoba, has moved to shut down what it calls a wave of unverified and speculative claims about the circumstances of her death, insisting that only its official statements should be trusted going forward.
Osoba’s death was first made public on Wednesday by fellow actor Alesh Sanni, who broke the news in an emotional Instagram tribute describing sleepless nights since learning of her passing and recalling the good memories they shared as colleagues and friends.
The announcement quickly triggered an outpouring of grief across Nollywood, with tributes pouring in from fans and industry figures, including veteran actress Foluke Daramola, who mourned her in a brief but emotional post.
Osoba, 40, had been something of a symbol of resilience within the industry in the months before her death. Her passing came just under a year after she made an emotional return to acting following a successful battle with breast cancer, having undergone surgery and radiation treatment after discovering a lump during a self-examination.

It appealed to the public to stop sharing or amplifying such information, arguing that doing so only deepens the family’s grief at an already painful time.
The family also used the statement to appeal for privacy, asking to be allowed to mourn without being subjected to rumour and sensational narratives, and made clear that any future updates on the matter would come strictly through official channels and authorised representatives, urging both media and the public to disregard any account that doesn’t originate from those sources.
Notably, some reports citing the family statement have suggested the family specifically disputed the widely assumed link between Osoba’s death and her cancer history, though her official cause of death has not been publicly disclosed as of this report.
The statement closed on a note of gratitude, thanking Nigerians for the prayers, love and support extended to the family during what it described as a heartbreaking period, and asking that Osoba’s memory and the family’s privacy continue to be respected.
Osoba was widely known in the Yoruba film industry for her versatility across genres, having featured in titles such as Ile Owo, Omo Iya Kan and Gucci Girls. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
