Nigerian University suspends lectures

The University of Jos has suspended lectures and called an emergency meeting for all students following growing security concerns and a series of violent incidents within and around the institution.

The decision was announced ahead of the meeting scheduled for Friday after the university management raised concerns about threats to safety on campus.

Students have been directed to attend the gathering, with academic activities put on hold to allow full participation.

The move comes about two weeks after the headless body of a farmer was found on farmland located within the university’s permanent site.

Days later, another tragic incident occurred when a student, Ibrahim Mbaya, was allegedly beaten to death by a mob at an off-campus residence over claims of phone theft.

In an internal memorandum signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ishaya Tanko, the university said the meeting was necessary because of recent developments affecting peace, security and the institution’s reputation.

According to the management, discussions during the meeting will focus on security challenges within the university community, recent incidents involving students and practical steps that can be taken to protect lives and restore order.

The university said it wants students to work together with the management in finding solutions that will improve safety on campus and create a more peaceful environment for learning.

The emergency meeting is expected to bring together students and university officials to discuss ways of preventing further violence and strengthening security measures across the institution.
