Minister of Works, David Umahi, has dismissed reports alleging that the death of a nurse, Mary Habila, at his residence in Ebonyi State was surrounded by secrecy.
Umahi spoke on Sunday while inspecting ongoing work on the Ebonyi section of the Calabar–Ebonyi–Benue–Nasarawa–Abuja Superhighway.
He explained that it was the deceased’s family members who forced open her room after becoming worried about her and immediately took her to the hospital.
According to the minister, the matter was also promptly reported to the police.
Umahi added that he had directed that an autopsy be carried out with the consent of Habila’s parents to determine the cause of her death.
Rejecting claims of a cover-up, he said there was nothing secretive about the incident.
“The family broke the girl’s door, called doctors from DUFUTH, who took her to hospital and did everything to revive her, but failed.
“The family reported the matter to the police, so where is the secrecy?”
The minister also disclosed that he had instructed his lawyers to begin legal action against those spreading what he described as false reports about the nurse’s death.
Umahi described Mary Habila as a committed staff member of the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital.
He added that the deceased’s parents, who are currently in Ebonyi State, would address journalists and also take legal action against those responsible for circulating what he called false information.
